Description:
Rugged looking 4-6-4 Hudson was built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1937 as NYC 5409 (serial #68843, class J-3a). The loco served for nearly 31 years before being retired in February of 1956. The photo was taken a month later so it wasn't immediately sent to the scrapper's torch. May be the last photo of this proud loco ever taken. Specs - 79" drivers, impessive 265psi boiler pressure, 22.5x29" cylinders, engine weight of 360,000 lb, tractive effort of 41,860 lb, booser tractive effort of 12,100 lb.
