Description:  I rode the last B&M steam run from Boston to Portland on April 22, 1956 - this is a water stop. Note the sanding as 3713 backs to the water standpipe. Built by Lima in 1934, 3713 was one of the last and heaviest Pacifics built. Now being restored at Steamtown.

Description:  B&M P-4b 4-6-2 3713 is backing the excursion train which just arrived in the late afternoon from Portland to the coach yard outside North Station, Boston. Some commuter trains would be steam powered for a few months. The relatively new highways obscure the station building.

Title:  SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM
Description:  B&M P-4-a 4-6-2 3713 has returned to the East Somerville engine terminal (Boston) and is being serviced after taking an excursion train to Portland. This may be the last photo of 3713 in steam. I shot her with available light. Built by Lima in 1934, the Pacific is being restored at Steamtown. Steam continued to power commuter trains for a few more months but 3713 pulled the last long distance steam train and was not suitable for the commuter trains. She lasted this long mainly because she was equipped to operate with a snow conveyor/melter. Note that only half the coal tower shows in the photo - it serviced six tracks.

Description:  Steamtown's Boston & Maine Pacific still undergoing restoration inside the restoration shop. A 1934 product of the Lima Locomotive Works, the 3713 was one of the locomotives part of a contest that the B&M held for schoolchildren living along their railroad to name the engines. This locomotive was given the name "Constitution", which lasted through most of its service life. Retired in the 1950s, it would be sold to F. Nelson Blount through the Edaville Railroad as one of the first locomotives that would make up the Steamtown collection. It is currently one of two 4-6-2 type engines from New England under restoration to active service, the other MEC 470 at Ellsworth, ME.
